After having a quick look at Gérard Rancinan's work that is being showcased in Opera Gallery, I am sure I will love with the rest of this French photographer's debut exhibition. His visual imagination in his latest series, all presented with an extreme shock factor, is making its first Asian world tour stop in Hong Kong. With the limited pieces that I have seen so far, the compositions have already somewhat reminded me of Mark Velasquez's take on the conventional children's stories, both containing a twist to the traditional images in our minds.
Gérard Rancinan is originally from the wine making Bordeaux region of France, and his extensive travelling allowed him to witness many historically important events first hand, such as natural catastrophes, civil wars, and urban riots. After coming face to face with the grotesque side of human nature, he had the urge of expressing himself through powerful imageries to convey messages he finds important for the world. His works are always challenging the existing social paradigms.
His collection, named Metamorphoses, is a series of larger-than-life photos that is inspired by traditional masterpieces such as Thomas Couture’s Romans in the Decadence of the Empire, testifying the values of our world. With his unique and vivid genius, he presents images that provoke all sorts of questions against the accelerated globalisation, such as ecology, human rights, and fast-food. His other collections, Hypotheses, depict the world as a “big amusement park, creating breathtaking portraiture that reveals the individual's impact on humanity. Get ready for a set of photos that pushes you out of your comfort zone!

From now until Friday, 2 December 2011, Sin Sin Fine Art is hosting a solo exhibition for a Contemporary German artist, Tilo Kaiser. He is a collagist and a multi-media artist who is largely influenced by German art movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Comic Drawing, and Graffiti. His works adopt fast and ever changing influences of colours, contents, and styles, mixing it all with the traditional forms of painting.
You will be able to see his latest collection sending out culturally diverse messages. His use of multi-colour crayons to draft doodles might seem like a random coincidence, but it is in fact carefully planned and crafted. He finds the images themselves being exotic and exciting, and the audience will have to dig real deep to try and find meaningful context from within.

Be prepared for another art exhibition opening cocktail with Schoeni Art Main Gallery at 6:30pm on Thursday, 17 November 2011! They will be presenting the latest solo exhibition of Shuai Mei, named the Garden in the Mirror for its dreaminess, which features her latest creations painted with tempera on canvas. I love how her works demonstrate her signature artistic feminine touch, with the boudoir of her elegantly and fragile figures somewhat loosely translate into scenes from ancient Chinese dynasty, evoking a sense fondness towards our collaborative distant past.
Shuai Mei was educated in Beijing, and has been well known for her creating paintings that merge modernity and antiquity, as well as reality and fantasy. Her paintings are delicately applied, and due to her meticulous techniques, she can only produce four to five pieces per year, so these are seriously precious artwork. I have always been a sucker for pseudo Chinese architecture, like the decor inside Hu Tong and Aqua Luna, so you can imagine why I like this collection, which feels like it is pulling me right into the painting and trade places with the female protagonist, enjoying a moment of tranquility in the heart of a hectic city.
