Believe it or not, the Germans actually have a word for sound art - Klangkunst. To them, the eye and the ear play an equally important role among various senses, which is why they don't just ogle at paintings and sculptures, but also experiment with sounds and spaces, making use of everyday objects as well as situations from daily lives. This is what brought the Goethe Institut to ship this unique exhibition over for us Hong Kongers, so that we could experience mundane events in sparkling new way, and discover the world of perception at our own pace. Johannes Sistermanns, one of the maestros in Klangkunst, is the curator of this exhibition, and he will be at the opening reception on Thursday, 3 November 2011, to give you an introduction on sound art development in contemporary Germany. So go along and eavesdrop on the installations, play with them, and perhaps even build one for yourself!

Reckon you know don't know much about contemporary China? Find out more from Wu Hai-zhou, an artist who has been through China’s economic development after the Cultural Revolution first hand, and witnessed the transformation of society as a result of such. He will be present at the opening of his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, the Hallucinatory Authenticity, being hosted by VA Gallery on the coming Friday, 4 November 2011. After his solo exhibition in Germany and Beijing, he is here now in Hong Kong to show us his unique interpretation of the world, through intertwining his perception of colours and brushwork. Being born and educated in China, his keen observations and realistic depictions will give us a sense of ambiguous hesitation and reticence, so save the date for this special event!

Galia Amsel, a British born glass artist who is currently residing in New Zealand, will be returning to Hong Kong to show off her latest set of works at Koru Contemporary Art, which would be hosting an opening reception on the coming Friday, 4 November 2011. Her pieces, being rather technically challenging, influenced the contemporary glass movement. Her latest collection continues to expand on themes of exploration between tension and balance, which looks like capturing moments in movement and rhythm, with hidden calculations on the tipping point. So for a sneak peek of her works, you no longer need to travel all the way to Victoria and Albert Museum in London or Corning Museum of Glass in New York! It makes a perfect trip for the weekend, where you could just head off to Aberdeen for the exhibition before you go onto the Jumbo Floating Restaurant for a champagne brunch.

Galia Amsel - Solo Exhibition
Address: Koru Contemporary Art, Unit 1064, 16/F Hing Wai Centre, 7 Tin Wan Praya Road, Aberdeen.

Shanghai Street Studios host a series of workshops, including this fantastic honey upcycling candle-making workshop led by Michael Leung. I totally adore the milk bottle one with a milk tea looking candle embedded inside! The workshop includes an introduction on the concept of upcycling, which is a booming trend worldwide; how to source for local packaging that is funky while environmental friendly; and there is still time to make two pieces of upcycled natural beeswax candles! RSVP with them today.
