Performing Arts Events for November 2011

Published exclusively in this site on 31 October 2011.

From now until Sunday, 20 November 2011

This year we have gone through the Mexican Film Festival, the Polish Film Festival, and the German Film Festival. How could we call it complete if we mitigated our own motherland? So here comes the Chinese Film Panorama, which has been ongoing since our handover in 1997, and continuously acting as a bridge for Hong Kong in getting to know more about our roots, through airing its latest films. The selection of movies they are bringing on screen this year include ones with shining casts, such as the Law of Attraction, Eternal Moment, and Color Me Love. I have always been interested in short stories, and the Laws of Attraction, starring Karen Mok and Zhang Jing-chu, consists of several bittersweet tales on love and attraction in a big city. Eternal Moment, on the other hand, is based on a popular TV series in China, featuring Li Ya-peng and Xu Jing-lei, playing out how love is like in Mainland nowadays. Want to get a glimpse of life in contemporary China? Mark down the schedule and grab your tickets for screenings at the Hong Kong Film Archives and Hong Kong Space Museum!

Friday, 4 November 2011 to Sunday, 6 November 2011

From Friday, 4 November 2011 to Sunday, 6 November 2011, Hong Kong Ballet will be featuring three original pieces created just for them at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Moments In Time, staging pieces by the most promising contemporary Canadian and Chinese choreographers, Peter Quanz, Kinsun Chan and Fei Bo, presents a series of powerful and provoking ballets. Fei Bo finds working with the Hong Kong Ballet an exciting challenge, since she could create a piece for a city with so many cultural clashes, while Kinsun Chan hopes to, though his piece, open a wider channel for contemporary ballet. Peter Quanz loves to see how individual dancers wove the traditional Chinese dancing in with his choreography, which made the piece more fluid and elegant.

Madeleine Onne, Artistic Director of The Hong Kong Ballet, invited this selection of choreographers, since they are striking artists who could lead the Hong Kong Ballet's dancers through a sequence of different moments in time. In Black on Black, Kinsun Chan attempts to explore the timelessness of the colour black. In A Room of Her Own, Fei Bo focuses on the multi-facet emotions of the heroine, while in Luminous, Peter Quanz speaks to the audience about the fragility of human relationships.

Like all Hong Kong Ballet performances, there are pre-performance events for us to get to know a bit more about this show. There will be a talk to walk you through the performance at 6:50pm right before the dance on Friday, 4 November 2011, which would be held at the Level 2 Foyer of Hong Kong Cultural Centre, so don't miss the chance in learning more about ballet!

Extra-Curricular Activities: Acoustic Guitar Workshop

There are more healthy extra-curricular activities than those suggested by Sir Gordon Wu. Shanghai Street Studios are hosting Acoustic Guitar Workshops, directed by their artist-in-residence, Az Samad. The workshop covers how to accompany singers, some percussive groovy techniques, strumming and finger style secrets, as well as a realistic guide on practicing for busy musicians.
