Trendsetting Jetsetters - Early Hong Kong Travel 1880-1939

Published exclusively in this site on 6 September 2011.

Planning a happy hour get-together with a couple of mates tonight? University Museum and Art Gallery in the University of Hong Kong is hosting an opening cocktail this evening for their upcoming exhibition, Early Hong Kong Travel 1880-1939. The presentation makes up a part of The University of Hong Kong’s centennial celebration, displaying exquisite collections from Benjamin Yim, the Hong Kong Heritage Project, the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, and Louis Vuitton. Look at that amazing Louis Vuitton Stokowski Writing Desk Trunk from 1936!

At an age where we take airplanes almost as frequently as buses, it is hard to imagine how people from the last century traveled on ocean liner voyages, with trips taking anything from several months to half a year. During Hong Kong's pre-war British colonial occupation, trunks and moveable furniture would play an important role in travelling, both in terms of functionality, as well as flaunting its Euro-American owners' prestigious status.

Want to see a show that is almost as enchanting as the Harmston's Grand Circus Performance back in 17 November 1913? Drop by the T T Tsui Building tonight for a champagne reception before you head off to LKF! You might just be lucky enough to get the renowned collector Benjamin Yim himself, Clement Kwok, the CEO from the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, as well as Jean-Baptiste Debains, the President of Louis Vuitton Asia Pacific, to tell you a bit more about their exhibits.
