I was captivated by Yang Yong-liang's work during my visit to ArtHK11, as he creatively combined traditional Chinese painting with contemporary scenery. You can imagine my excitement when I heard that Schoeni Art Gallery, an esteemed Chinese contemporary art gallery, is planning to host a solo exhibition for him in September 2011. Obviously I immediately RSVP for the vernissage held in the early evening of 1 September 2011 for a glimpse of his latest collection, the Peach Colony, inspired by the Accounts of the Peach Blossom Spring.
Yang Yong-liang was professionally trained in Chinese painting at a very young age, which is why he has such a knack for creating modern scenery in a Song dynasty style painting. Phantom Metropolis, as the exhibition is called, reflects the rapid infrastructural changes in China's major cities, and the irrevocable damages we as humans are doing to our environment. If you want to explore just how modern landscape can be incorporated in traditional art forms, this is an exhibition you can't afford to miss. RSVP for the opening reception now, or drop by between 2 September 2011 and 8 September 2011 to take a good look!
