Social Media Shopping

First published in Elysiants on 1 December 2011.

Everyone uses facebook. Whether you have or haven't watched the Social Network, you would still have to realised that. Otherwise we won't be seeing trends such as the "Like" cushion being on sale in the Chinese New Year markets. Fashion brands understand that we go on facebook practically more than we check our emails, so most of them have set up their own fan page. That way, we get to check out their latest collections on our news feed almost as soon as it arrives. Let's see what brands we can be surfing on facebook!

Ascot Chang is a bespoke men's wear brand originating from Shanghai, bringing traditional tailoring and contemporary style together in a perfect blend. On their facebook wall, you can read up on their latest news, as well as browse through seasons of product shots and fashion shows. As a tailoring brand, the best part of their facebook would be the updated travelling itinerary of their representatives, so fans could mark down when they will be in town, to make sure you get your perfect shirt fitted.

Tabla is an Indian women's wear brand based in Hong Kong, mixing traditional Indian embroidery together with modern-day versatility. Their facebook wall obviously carries their updated news, but it also shows celebrities sporting a Tabla piece, which is a good way for us to see how the clothing looks like on real people. There are also catalogue shots of their latest collection, so you can ogle at what you like while racing to their shop.

Tassels Hong Kong carries an exclusive collection of men's shoes, including Alden Shoes, Bontoni, and Crockett & Jones. Their facebook wall contains lots of information on their latest shipments and, more importantly, when they are on sales. There are also some news clippings and decent reviews, as well as a discussion board where they bounce ideas around to get some useful feedback. I love their facebook blog, where they would go into lots of details in explaining a certain trend or a particular pair of shoes, which allows us to make an informed decision.

Fleur Fleur sources women's wear and accessories directly from Japan, so you can be sure what you get is what is hip and happening in Shinjuku. They carry Smork by Languages, Non-sens, and Jilky, just to name a few. Their facebook wall is mainly only what they have recently imported from Japan, with a few news clippings. They also occasionally use their discussion forum to share blogs and announce a challenge (with tempting rewards).

There isn't a soul in Hong Kong who hasn't heard of the proudly local brand, G.O.D. Their designs incorporate old fashion items with out of the box ideas, which is exciting and inspiring. It is interesting to see that their facebook wall is filled with fans asking about pieces they are lusting for, but it also carries lots of information on their latest innovations. They display photos of their in-house events, as well as some reviews on their designs from satisfied customers.
