Beat the Heat - Day Out at South Bay

First published in Elysiants on 22 November 2011.

It is boiling hot in Hong Kong right now, so what could we do the embrace the weather? It can't get any better than a day of sunshine and sea! But like everywhere else in Hong Kong, popular beaches like Repulse Bay, Stanley, and Big Wave Bay are absolutely packed, so let's explore a more remote alternative - South Bay.

How to Get There

Don't attempt to drive there, because there are limited parking spaces and the traffic is appalling. Why not make a dramatic entrance by renting a kayak from Deep Water Bay and make your way over by sea? There are clubs at the end of Deep Water Bay beach that hire kayaks with no advance booking required. You get your own kayak for the entire day, pedals, life jackets, as well as lockers for your belongings. For all the stuff you want to bring over to South Bay, remember to put it in a waterproof bag from Racing the Planet.

What to Do There

Obviously sunbathing and swimming is mandatory for any beach trips, so remember to get some beach mats and towels from King Tak Hong. For decent water toys at local prices, go to Toys Station. As for your swimwear, resort wear, and flip flops? Go and look through Quiksilver/Roxy for a decent selection. Don't forget your Cancer Council Australia Sunscreen and mosquito repellent from Escapade Sports!

What to Eat There

Don't bother bringing a picnic basket, whatever you crave for, the South Bay Beach Club carries. From fine wines to cheeseburger, they serve everything you will need for the day. You can choose to either stay in house at their al fresco lounge and enjoy their DJ's tunes, or bring your food back to the beach for more tanning. Their lounge feels rather like Ibiza, so just sit back, relax, and enjoy your day out with a couple of close friend!

Enjoy the Sun!
