Hong Kong Design Institute and Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee) jointly organised the Design Graduation Show 2011 last Thursday, 23 June 2011. The show features some of the best pieces by their graduating class.
The Hong Kong Design Institute, though lesser known internationally in comparison to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is actually rather successful in its field. Students from the Institute have won industry recognised awards, such as this piece by Sarah Lam, which is the Sarah Whirlpool Overall Champion 2011 for the Remix International Fur Competition. The collection, inspired by spiral staircases, whirlpools, and seashells, attempts to combine architecture with fashion design.
The Fashion Show was held at the Institute's campus in Tseung Kwan O, which is an award winning piece in itself. We first had to walk through a series of showcases on jewelry and fashion accessories designs by their graduating class toward the catwalk. This piece by Koleman Chan won the 11th Footwear Design Competition in the Ladies' Shoes and Bags Category. The Call of the Snakes, as the collection was named, features the elegance of snakeskin with thrilling effects.
The Fashion Show promptly started, and the pieces were exciting and engaging. Jill Chan's Black Futurism certainly caught my eye, and I love how the colours run into one another.
I also fancy Ka-ying Chiu's Emission, which is a swaying maxi dress that is both eye-catching on stage as well as practice for everyday wearing. The night wrapped up with the Institute naming the best designs of the evening.
Although the Fashion Show is only for that evening, the rest of the exhibition will be on till 5 July 2011, so drop the Institute an email for more details on the arrangements.
