Shang-HIGH - Weekend Getaway

First published in Elysiants on 9 November 2011.

Shanghai is the perfect place for a short trip out of town. Not only is it close by, it also offers an amazing social scene. Whether you are a hard core foodie or a clubbing junkie, there is something for everyone.

Restaurant

You have probably heard a lot of wonderful things about M on the Bund, and now it is time you try it out for yourself. Their brunch is a real value for money, since you can share your huge portions with each other and try out more of the items on the menu. It is also a great place to drop by first when you get to Shanghai, because they have Time Out Shanghai and SH Magazine available for their patrons. You can get all the up to date information here at one go.

Another French restaurant on the menu is Mr. & Mrs. Bund, an upscale eatery just a few steps along the Bund. Their mouth-watering delicacies and fine wines are accompanied by the breathtaking view of the Bund. A splendid choice for dinner.

Shopping

City God Temple offers a wide range of products, from Chinese inspired clothing to 3D iPhone cases. You will have a fantastic time digging around for great deals and quirky goods.

Hotel

Conveniently located next to the City God Temple, the Renaissance Shanghai Yu-yuan Hotel is an ideal choice of stay, putting you within walking distance with most of the attractions in the city, as well as making yourself at home in their spacious and comfortable rooms.

Culture

Shanghai, as a busy financial city, surprisingly has much culture to offer. You can visit the Shanghai Museum for an elaborate spread of ancient Chinese art. Alternatively, if you are planning a trip to Shanghai anytime around 16 April 2011 to 26 June 2011, you can drop by Leo Gallery to admire Kevin Fung's wooden carvings in his solo exhibition - In Between.

Nightlife

Regional clubbing chains like M1NT and Prive are hip and happening, so you can be sure to have a great night out. The crowd is slightly older than that in Hong Kong, and you will find yourself mingling with real globetrotters.

Excursion

En route to the famous Zhou-zhuang, you will be passing by the Grandview Garden. For those of you who are a Chinese literature fanatic and loves the Dreams of the Red Chamber, this is a spot not to be missed.

Zhou-zhuang is the world famous Venice of the East. It is worth taking a guided tour around, where you will be shown all the secrets and hideaways of how servants back in the days travelled about without being seen nor heard, and how the damsels hid themselves while talent spotting in the attics.

Ni-hao!
